Bombardier Richard Tawn

14508801 Bombardier Richard Tawn, of the 53rd Airlanding Light Regiment, RA, killed in action on the 25th March 1945, aged 20. He flew in a Horsa glider carrying Captain Thomas, Lance-Bombardiers Thompson and Homer, Gunners Moreland and Steadman, a wireless jeep, trailer, and two light motorcycles. The glider landed about three miles to the West of LZ-P, and Captain Thomas led the party, together with the two gliders pilots, in the direction of the Divisional area, but they were engaged at close range by automatic fire which killed four and wounded others. Thomas and the survivors occupied a house and fought a spirited action in its defence until, out of ammunition, they were obliged to surrender. Copyright: Helen Arnold.
