Coy employed on delivery of stores for operational layouts, and workshop on production of extra seats for WACO gliders and demolition charges.  Working until 2215 hours - Very hot day.

 

2nd July 1943

Stores section employed on trial loading of Bailey Bridge into WACO gliders - 25 Gliders required for 50 ft. [Double Single?] Bridge - O.C. to CRE's Conference 1700 hrs - this being first conference at which all RE units of the formation have been inspected in this theatre.

 

3rd July 1943

Coy on works - Workshop Section on half day having completed urgent commitments.  OC & Lt. D.N. Flatt to demonstration of 'Gun Bursting' on SFAX road - unit manufactured 'Hayrick Charge' most satisfactory.

Coy worked morning only having completed most operational commitments and proceeded on bathing parade during afternoon.

Sudden rush of operational work again - 500 Rifle fire simulators to be made up.  Whole unit on fire fighting due to 'blow up' of RASC dump.

Stores Section employed until 2300 hrs on completion of 500 dummy parachutists - Workshop Section on urgent requirement of flexible bangalore torpedoes and climbing grapnels - all items being 1st priority.  CRE advised unit at 1400 hours on possible future role of the unit.  Capt. W.T. HOLGATE reported to unit from 249 Fd Coy RE (Airborne) (6th Airborne Div) for duty as 2 i/c.

 

8th July 1943

Coy parade 1045 hrs with Division for inspection by General B.L. MONTGOMERY.  Re-organisation of workshop and repairs to stores and unit G1098 started.

 

9th July 1943

No operational works.  Coy on bathing parade and medical inspection.  [Lt?] MENZIES S.C.F. attached to unit.  Coy witnessed departure by air of many gliders on 1st operational offensive against ITALY.

 

10th July 1943

Stores section on urgent production of explosive rings of cordtex for blowing off tails of 'Horsa' gliders used by R.A. to remove guns quickly.

 

11th July 1943

Whole Coy less No.2 Section move to camp at HAMMAMET. NR TUNIS.  Small amount of trg done - mostly rest camp - 2i/c in charge.

OC returned to M'SAKEN.  1/3 ton lorry overturned outside TUNIS.  Passengers & driver unhurt.

 

25th July 1943

1600 - Small rear party left at HAMMAMET - Main body return here.  OC to Conference 1000 hrs with CRE to establish water point for Division.  [?] pipe line being laid by Works Service R.E. it has proved [unsuitable?].  Further malaria suspect admitted to TUNIS hospital.

 

26th July 1943

0730 - Stores section departed for HAMMAMET camp.  Coy on works - excessively hot to day.

1/3 ton lorry returned from REME completely repaired.  Order to make 150 WACO seats received.  Heavy dust storms to day and very hot - many rumours regarding Italian situation.

Stores Section returned to unit 1200 hrs.  Party departed to SICILY under Lt. A.E. Hepper R.E. - Div [?].  1 jeep & tlr only as 2 others were returned at 2359 hrs.
