Month and year: June 1944

1st June 1944

Place: Tarrant Rushton

"D Day" is obviously approaching.  From midday the camp has been "frozen" i.e. no one is allowed in or out of camp.

1200 - 6 HORSAS were ferried from NETHERAVON after a good deal of difficulty with the weather.  One aircraft also did air to air firing.  There was no night flying.

2nd June 1944

Place: Tarrant Rushton

1030 - Aircraft are being allotted to particular crews for the forthcoming operations.  Final air tests were begun both for tugs and gliders.  3 air tests were done on squadron aircraft and 5 operational HAMILCARS were given theirs, towed by squadron aircraft.  In addition 3 HORSAS were ferried from NETHERAVON and 1 detail of air to air firing was completed.

2245 - 5 night HAMILCAR lifts were done by a squadron aircraft.

3rd June 1944

Place: Tarrant Rushton

1000 - 3 aircraft  were air tested and 1 did air to air firing.

1100 - Preliminary briefing for our part in "D Day" operations was given to air crew by the Station Commander, Group Captain T.B. COOPER D.F.C.

4th June 1944

Place: Tarrant Rushton

A day of preparation; a long time spent on detailed briefing for our night operations which will precede the dawn invasion of "D Day".  In the evening a film was shown of the run-in, taken off a model.  Also the bulk of the aircraft were tested today; altogether 20 air tests were completed.  The aircraft now have "invasion marks" painted on them, that is black and white bands towards the tips of the wings and the end of the fuselage.  In this war paint they are not allowed off the circuit.

Crews are now fully briefed.  About lunch time word came through that the operations will take place tonight.  Crews are detailed as follows:-

Operation 'COUP DE MAIN';- W/Cdr D.H. DUDER D.S.O. D.F.C. (with F/LT M.A.F. BARREN'S crew), W/O A.K. BERRY, W/O G.P. BAIN.  This operation of six HALIFAX - HORSA combinations is intended to provide for the capture intact of two mined bridges, one over the River ORNE and one over the CAEN CANAL.  If the operation is successful these bridges will give the 6th AIRBORNE DIVISION communication with the left flank of the beachhead forces.

Operation 'TONGA';- to two HAMILCARS;- F/LT J.A.G SIZMUR and F/LT A.F. ENSOR.  To tow HORSAS;- S/LDR G.H. BRIGGS, F/LT R.I. IMBER, F/O L.N. NORTHMORE, P/O A.W. DOUGILL, W/O R.A. SMITH, F/SGT J.B. MUTTON, F/O C.E. ANDERSON, F/O J.B. STARK D.F.C., S/LDR G.K.A. BROWNING, F/O R.I. CARPENTER, F/O D.H. LEE, F/SGT T.M. GRIFFITHS, F/SGT J.T.C. DAVIES, F/O W.W. BROWN, F/SGT O.K. SMITH, F/SGT G.H. CUNLIFFE (15 HORSA tugs in all).  In charge of ground organisation:- F/LT M.A.F. BARREN.  This is the main air landing operation.  The 6th AIRBORNE DIVISION is going into the area North East of CAEN.  The personnel in the gliders towed from this station are ROYAL ARTILLERY and Anti-tank Units.  The HORSA'S are mostly carrying six-pounder guns and jeep tractors; the HAMILCARS have seventeen-pounder guns and Morris Tractors.

2230 - The operation "COUP DE MAIN" took off.  Aircraft carried light bombs.  They were to release gliders at 6,000 feet and fly straight on to CAEN and bomb a factory, to make surprise complete.  5 of the 6 HORSAS on this operation landed close to their objectives, although the release height had to be about 4,500 feet owing to cloud.  The bridges were seized intact and held.

0130 - Aircraft on operation 'TONGA' took off from 01.30 onwards.  The HAMILCAR Combinations took off at 02.10.  In the large majority of cases the operation was successfully carried out, but 2 gliders landed safely in this country.  One wing attachment on the HORSA towed by F/O L.N. NORTHMORE failed and the glider cast off; the pilot of the HAMILCAR towed by F/LT A.F. ENSOR was unable to hold his control column forward and the tow rope broke through the tension so caused.  All other combinations reached the other side but found over there considerable, and unexpected, patches of cloud down to and well below the release height of 1,500 feet.  The HORSA towed by F/SGT J.B. MUTTON had its rope break on the approach to the coast; it is hoped that the glider reached FRANCE.  The rope of a HAMILCAR towed by F/LT J.A.G SIZMUR also broke, but within half a mile of the proper release point.  Otherwise the run-in was completed with success by all aircraft, it is believed, in spite of the fact that this meant towing through a considerable amount of cloud, and that there was light flak.  It was generally agreed that the glider pilots had done extraordinarily well to hang on during this time.  F/O C.E. ANDERSON and crew were missing from this operation.  A burning HALIFAX was seen flying in the area so that there is hope that the crew baled out and is safe.
