Operation Market.  25 Aircraft took off at approximately 10.15 hrs for the Arnhem area of Holland.  6 of the aircraft acted as Path Finders and they carried 97 troops.  The remaining 19 aircraft were towing gliders which contained 130 troops, 17 Jeeps, 7 light and one heavy Motor cycle, 17 trailers - 7 guns and one bicycle.  All successfully carried out their sorties with the exception of P/O. Middleton who had to return to base as his glider cast off over South Cerney.  Certain amount of flak encountered, F/L. Anderson had his tail holed - and S/L. Gibb received damage to his tail plane.  Enemy flak positions were well beaten up by our own fighters.

* F/O Farren.  His glider landed approximately 25 miles short of L.Z. owing to rope breaking due to violent slipstream.

** F/S Herger.  Whilst over Holland F/S Herger's aircraft was forced close into a Dakota by the Slipstream of another aircraft.  He put his nose down to avoid Dakota - the glider went up to miss Dakota and the tow rope broke, and Glider landed safely at Overflakken.

*** P/O Sellars.  Starboard outer motor failed just after forming up and he had to return to base after casting off his glider at South Cerney.  The glider landed there successfully.

**** F/O Bebarfald.  Just before reaching the English Coast the tow rope snapped away owing to the glider getting into advance of normal position.  Both tug and glider landed at Woodbridge and later in the day returned to base after a new rope had been flown down.

19th September 1944

Place: Fairford

Two Stirlings towed Horsa Gliders containing 6 troops, 2 Jeeps, and 3 trailers, took off for the Arnhem Area for resupply at approximately 12.30 hrs.  One aircraft flown by P/O Jones was successful and returned safely, but encountered a certain amount of light flak.  F/O Bebarfald was unsuccessful.  Approaching the Dutch coast he ran into low cloud and the glider overtaking the tug nearly forced the latter into the sea - meanwhile the rope broke and the glider hit the water.  3 men were seen to climb into a dinghy dropped by the tug.  It is believed that both glider Pilots were killed.  Meanwhile F/O. Bebarfald returned to base.  Later 16 Stirlings took off at 13.00 hrs to drop 384 Containers and 64 Panniers in the Arnhem area.  Very heavy flak was encountered and many aircraft returned damaged.  W/O Pelletier WOP. in F/O Pascoe's crew was wounded in the shoulder also one despatcher as well.  F/S Coeshott did not return and there was no news of his aircraft.  S/L Gilliard failed to return.  Whilst over the DZ his aircraft was hit by two shells severing the controls.  The order to bale out was given and S/L Bantoft who was Second Pilot - F/O Cullen, Bomb Aimer, F/O Lawton Navigator, the F/E F/S Byrne and 1 Despatcher baled out.  It is thought that the WOP F/O Lane baled out but no confirmation.  It is believed that S/L Gilliard did not bale out and that F/O McEwen was also probable lost.  F/O Cullen and F/O Lawton landed behind enemy lines and eventually reached Britain.  F/S Byrne was seen in Arnhem hospital by F/O Cullen and is believed to be a prisoner of war.

Operation Market.  17 aircraft carrying 403 Containers and 68 Panniers were despatched to the Arnhem area for resupply.  They took off at approximately 14.43 - 1459 hrs.  14 aircraft returned to base having successfully carried out their mission.  Heavy flak was encountered over the D.Z. and six aircraft were damaged.  F/O Matheson who did not return was not seen to go down but it is believed he was hit by flak.  F/O Le Bouvier was hit by flak in the Port wing before the D.Z. was reached.  The wing caught fire and all the crew had to abandon the aircraft.  F/O Le Bouvrier the Pilot, F/O Oliver, Navigator, F/S Sanders the WOP and Mr. Townshend Daily Telegraph War Correspondent got through to the British lines successfully, but no news of the remainder of the crew.  F/O Robertson's aircraft was hit over the D.Z., the aircraft went into a steep dive as the Elevator trimming tabs had been damaged and F/S Thompson WOP was wounded.  F/O Robertson with the aid of the Bomb Aimer F/Lt. Roseblade managed to regain control of the aircraft and eventually made a successful belly landing at Ghent Airfield.

Place: Fairford

Ten aircraft took off between 1200 hrs and 13.30 hrs for Arnhem for resupply of 1st Airborne Division.  They were carrying 240 containers and 40 Panniers.  Aircraft encountered heavy flak and fighter opposition and only 3 aircraft were successful, the remaining seven were either brought down by fighters or Flak and those aircraft that did return were damaged.  F/O Siegert who successfully completed his mission was attacked by two F.W.109 over the D.Z.  However by diving down to ground level he was eventually successful in evading the fighters, though not without damage to his aircraft and in addition W/O Thomson the WOP and one despatcher were wounded.  Meanwhile the rear Gunner F/S Welton kept up a steady fire at E/A and one of these were claimed as shot down.  Of those unsuccessful W/C Harrison, F/O Hay, F/S Herger are definitely missing and there is no news.  It is presumed that they were shot down by fighters.  F/O Bebarfald's aircraft was badly holed by flak over Elst - The load was jettisoned and the aircraft was then attacked by six M.E.107.  The aircraft caught fire and started to disintegrate and the order to bale out was given.  The WOP F/L Munro and the rear Gunner W/O Morris were the only members of the crew successful in baling out.  They were given shelter in a village and eventually reached British lines.  The remainder of the crew were killed and buried by the local inhabitants.  W/O Morris claimed to have hit one M.E.109 and set it on fire.

F/O Pascoe was hit by flak over the D.Z. and his rudder controls were severed and the port wing caught fire.  Although the aircraft was almost out of control he managed to bring off a successful belly landing behind friendly lines.  The aircraft was a complete write off.

F/Lt Anderson.  His aircraft was hit by flak and then attacked by enemy fighters.  Aircraft caught fire and F/L Anderson ditched the aircraft in the WAAL River.  The aircraft broke up.  The Flight Engineer (Sgt Smith) and the Bomb Aimer (F/S Orange) got into the dinghy and were helped to the river bank by Dutchmen.  It is believed that the remainder of the crew were drowned.

F/O Farren.  His aircraft was hit by flak over D.Z.  The Rear turret was damaged.  The aircraft was then attacked by 3 enemy aircraft and the order was given to bale out.  It is believed that the Bomb Aimer and the WOP were killed.  The Engineer (F/S Stone) and the gunner (F/S Browne) were taken to hospital.  The Nav F/S Ross who was unhurt returned to base.  F/O Farren who remained in the aircraft when it crashed was thrown through the windscreen and was taken to hospital with back injuries.
