Corporal William Jowett
Unit : 6th Airborne Reconnaissance Regiment
Army No. : 4616114
Awards : Military Medal
This NCO was one of the crew of a tank which on 27th March was operating in the Brunen area. The tank became bogged, and came under such heavy enemy fire that the Troop Leader was forced to give the order to abandon tank.
Immediately the crew left the tank, they came under very heavy small arms fire. This was returned, and a vigorous battle resulted, during which the Troop Leader became separated from the rest of his crew. Corporal Jowett at once assumed command. He fought his way back through the woods, rushed an enemy post and captured the section manning it. Opposition was continuous but he forced his way through it, finally reaching his squadron lines with the crew intact.
This NCO showed courage and initiative of a high order. He gave the men just that confidence required to turn the possible loss of a tank crew into its safe return with five prisoners.
