Fine sunny.  Arrangement of Unit briefing room - C.O. visited Section 1 and 4 and distributed briefing material.

 

22nd March 1945

Loading of H.Q. and Section gliders.  Briefing of NCOs for operation PLUNDER-VARSITY.

 

23rd March 1945

Fine sunny.  Completion of sea tail loading.  Bde Commander addressed H.Q. & Section 3 1400 hrs.  Addressed by C.O. 1430 hrs.

 

24th March 1945

Fine sunny.  Move to airfields and emplaning.  H.Q. (7 gliders) & Section 3 (2) from EARLS COLNE.  Section 1 (2) DUNMOW.  Section 4 from BIRCH (1 glider) & MATCHING (1 glider).  Total Unit gliders - 13.  Take off between 0700 & 0730 landed between 1030 & 1100 hrs in area HAMMINKELN (GERMANY).  10 gliders checked in by nightfall.  H.Q. opened CCP at house 200486 1200 hrs.  House at VOGELSANE (216486) recced by CO and found [satis?].  MDS opened 1600 hrs.  Section 4 ADS opened 1430 hrs at house 217493.  Section 1 ADS at house 202479.  Steady flow of casualties all afternoon & evening.  1800 hrs C.O. visited Div H.Q. & Sections.  Seven other houses taken over by midnight to house casualties.  Admissions 333   RTU - Nil   Evac - Nil   Operations 9   Deaths 4   Holding 329 (own Unit 1 killed 8 wounded).

 

25th March 1945

Fine sunny.  Admissions on smaller scale than previous day.  ADMS 6 Airborne Div arrived about 1000 hrs with 4 Amb Cars.  Capt Green reported his glider having landed in Belgium.  Evacuation commenced and proceeded all day.  Outlying cas holding houses evacuated as emptied - arrival of some gd tps.  Admissions 73   RTU - 1   Evacuation 268   Operations 16   Deaths 1   Remaining 132.

 

26th March 1945

Fine sunny.  0600 hrs M.D.S. under shell fire.  Two personnel wounded (1 subsequently died).  Evacuation continued & completed by early afternoon.  Sections 1, 3, 4 with [their?] jeeps, each attd to Bns on adv to high gd East of R. ISSEL astride rd to BRUNEN.  Brigadier TOMSBY, DDMS 12 Corps visited MDS.  'Sea-tail' with Capt Insley arrived in evening.  Admissions 102   RTU 4   Evac 225   Operations 11   Deaths 2   Remaining 3.

 

27th March 1945

Dull some rain.  Sections with Bns returned to HQ in afternoon but subsequently replaced.  C.O. to conference at Bde H.Q. warning order of Bde advance Eastward.  All outlying houses cleared.  Capt Shaw's glider found in late enemy occupied territory East of R. ISSEL.  Intensive search suggested all party P.O.W.  Admissions 36   RTU - 1   Evacuation 19   Operations 5   Deaths 3   Remaining - NIL.

 

28th March 1945

Dull some rain.  ADMS 52 Div (Col McREA) visited M.D.S.  C.O. visited Div H.Q.  In afternoon visited 212 Fd Amb at HAMMINKELN & thence to Div H.Q. (ERLE) and Bde H.Q. (RHADE).  Warning order of possible move forward.  Sections with Bns in RHADE area.  Admissions - 89   RTU - 4   Evacuation 92   Operations NIL   Remaining 6.  Capt GREENE and Surgical Team temporary attd 24 FDS.

 

29th March 1945

Dull, some rain.  MDS closed at HAMMINKELN 1200 hrs.  Sections moved with Bns area RHADE to area COESFELD 6172 by march route.  HQ party moved EAST via BRUNEN, ERLE (RED ROUTE) staging at RHADE and billeting at [civilian?] Hospital 475517 - opened temporary MDS for night.  C.O. moved fwd with Bde H.Q. arr area COESFELD 0200 hrs.  During day C.O. visited captured German Mily Hospital at MARIA HEEN 560605.  Admissions 6   Remaining 6.

 

30th March 1945

Fine sunny.  C.O. visited Div HQ 1000 hrs.  1100 HQ party moved fwd.  C.O. & Major WEST recced area COESFELD.  M.D.S. estab fm buildings 593700 opened 1700 hrs.  MAC cars called up for MDS 225 area GR. RECKEN.  In evening C.O. & Capt Insley visited Bde HQ & Sections - 3 at 611714, 4 at 610719, 1 at 596894.  Admissions 21   RTU - 1   Evac 26.  Evacuation now to 22 CCS at GEMEN 6063.

 

31st March 1945

Dull showery.  MDS remained at FM 595700.

 

1000 - CO visited 3 Section prior to move fwd with Bns.

 

1100 - DADMS visited Unit with plans for Div movements.

 

1200 - Major WEST visited captured German Hospital at 6472 and evacuated Br and Allied P.O.W. wounded.  MDS remained at fm all day.  Sections moved fwd N.W. with Bns.  Admissions 86   RTU - 2   Evacuation 84   Deaths 1.

1130 - Orders from ADMS: close MDS.  MDS closed and staged forward to 810819, and thence to billet in [farm?] 874885 WEST of GRAVEN.  Section remained with Bn and moved NE to harbour area in sq 9448, 9592, 9682.  Bde move East commenced 2100 hrs over DORTMUND-EMS CANAL at brs 982906, 978892.  Visited by CO in morning & CO visited Bde HQ 2100 hrs.  Admissions - 3   Evacuated - 3.

 

2nd April 1945

HQ harboured all day at 874885.  C.O. crossed br 978892 & visited Section in area NORTH and SOUTH of LADBERGEN 0730 hrs.  Conference of C.O's ADMS office 1000 hrs.

 

1230 - CO arr LENGERICH area.  No 3 Section ADS in Civil Hospital 078994.  No 1 Section at 080000.  CO visited German Military Hospital & reported to ADMS on capacity and condition.  9 Allied P of W found & news received concerning safety of Capt Shaw and glider party.  On return visited 225 (P) Fd Amb MDS site.  1900 hrs Major WEST & Capt Insley visited area LANGERICH visited Bde HQ and Section 1 & 3.  Admissions nil.

 

3rd April 1945

1000 - H.Q. Party moved fwd area GRAVEN lagering at Fm 4 miles EAST of [here?].  C.O. visited Bde HQ (LENGERICH) Div HQ Rear & 225 Fd Amb MDS at NIEDER LENGERICH.  HQ Party moved fwd area DORTMUND-EMS CANAL to billet at Civil Hospital at LENGERICH arrived 1930 hrs.  Sections remained with Bns in area LENGERICH and to NORTH EAST astride road LENGERICH - OSNABRUCK.

 

2300 -  Orders rec'd from ADMS for move to area WISSINGEN and to open MDS in morning.

 

2315 - Officers "O" Gp arrangements drawn up.  German Civil 2-[ton?] Ambulance Car acquired for Unit (Ford V-8).

 

4th April 1945

Intermittent showers.

 

0630 - HQ moved via OESEDE & 035208 to MDS site at WISSINGEN 321070.  Party arrived 0835 hrs.

 

1150 - MDS open.  Some fighting on axis to E of MDS and steady stream of cas all day.  Capt NAYSMITH and driver taken prisoner but subsequently recovered by Br Tps 1 Jeep lost.

 

1300 - GOC 6 Airborne Div, ADMS, CRA, DAQMG visited MDS.  Sections 1, 3, 4 moved with Bns to [Bde?] area [around?] LUBBECKE.

 

1900 - DADMS visited Unit.  Evacuate by MAC cars to 221 FDS (GRAVEN) & CCS at [GEBEL?].

 

2000 - ADMS 6 Airborne Div visited Unit.  Admissions 58   RTU 2   Evac 53   Operations 4   Deaths 1   Remaining 21.

1600 - Bde HQ at cross roads [HARRIENSTAHT?] 7919.  2 Oxf Bucks [? ?] SE tks [? ? ? ?] TODTENHAUSEN.  12 Devons [crossing?] area [?] ([?]).  RUR to seize PETERSHAGEN.  Pending establishment of [?] at [RIEDEWALDE?] (7613) No.1 Section ADS opened 768203 (up to 25 cas held).  No.4 Section to open ADS at TODTENHAUSEN.  No.3 Section ADS at PETERSHAGEN.  Cas to hold during night if [? ? ? ? ?] in PETERSHAGEN.

 

1800 - CAP est by 224 Para Fd Amb in FRIEDEWALDER location thence to MDS at LUBBECKE.

 

2300 - Unit MDS [staging post?] for casualties.  Admissions - 37   RTU - 1   Evac 29   Operation 3   Deaths -   Remaining - 2.  [? orderlies?] and Surgical Team working until 0530 hrs.

 

6th April 1945

Wet.  Major West forward to Unit locations and [?] information.  ADMS 6 Airborne Div visited Unit.  3 MOs (Bn Replacements) reported at Unit.  Section forward with Bns in PETERSHAGEN area.  Admission 36   Evacuation 34   Operation 9   Died - 1   Remaining 10.

 

7th April 1945

Fine sunny.  Orders rec'd for Unit to move.

 

1200 - MDS closed.  CO & Major West recce forward.

 

1300 - HQ party moved forward to staging post in PETERSHAGEN.  CO visited ADMS office.  Bde HQ (LAHDE) and all Sections and R.A.Ps in PETERSHAGEN and LAHDE area.  Some cas moved & evacuation to 225 (P) Fd Amb at GORSPEN (887218).  Evacuation 4   Death 1   Remaining 5 (5 part operative cases left at MDS at WISSINGEN with 1 MO (Capt MADIVEL) and 3 ORs in charge.

 

8th April 1945

Fine sunny.  0730 C.O. visited Div HQ.  H.Q. remained at PETERSHAGEN all [?] & crossed br. at 1430 hrs - moving fwd & arriving billets at BAD REHBURG (0027) 1640 hrs - Closed & on wheels.  Section 1 moved forward with 12 Devons.  Section 2 (1000 hrs) moved to ADS site GOERSPEN and remained then cleared to 34 FDS [BOXNITE?].  Section 4 remained with & moved fwd with Bn reporting to MDS at 2100 hrs.  Admission 7   Evac 7   Remaining 5.

 

9th April 1945

Dull fine.  Remaining Sections called in.  1 Amb Car left with each Bn.

 

1030 - CO to conference Bde HQ.

 

1100 - ADMS visited Unit.  In afternoon 1615 hrs CO addressed Unit & at 1700 hrs N.C.Os.

 

2040 - Orders from ADMS to move fwd in moving with Bde.  C.O. visited Bde H.Q. - Issue of orders to officers on return.

 

10th April 1945

Cold morning - fine sunny.

 

0730 - CO visited MO 12 Devons on to [?] O Gp Bde HQ.  Orders rec'd for move during day.

 

1530 - MDS [?] moved.  Sections moved with Bns.

 

1700 - C.O. visited ADMS office and 225 (Para) Fd Amb.

 

1830 - H.Q. party reached billet at HORST 223291.  MDS opened.

 

1730 - CO visited Bde H.Q.  Admission - 3   RTU - 1   Evac - 3   Held - 6.

 

11th April 1945

0900 - CO att conf Bde HQ.  Day fine sunny.  Sections withdrawn from Bns back to MDS.  Arrangements made for bathing & washing.  In afternoon C.O. visited ADMS office.  Admission 7   Evac 7   Remaining 6.

Fine, dull.  Rest day.  Baths etc organised.

 

1400 - D.A.D.M.S. 6 Airborne Div visited Unit.

13th April 1945

Fine sunny.  Sections returned to Bns 0900 hrs.  Staff Capt 6 Airldg Bde visited Unit.  Unit at one hours notice all day but nil movement.  Major M.R. Morley visited US Mily Hospital in HANOVER.  Admissions 7   RTU - 1   Evac 8   Remaining 4.

 

14th April 1945

Fine sunny.  Orders rec'd for move with Bde.

 

1100 - Recce party forward.  1 Amb [?] to collect party at WISSINGEN.

 

1200 - MDS closed.

 

1230 - Main party [?] moved via CELLE to staging area at GARSSEN, billeted in cement factory at 618551.  Sections moving with Bns.  Evac 4   Remaining - nil.

 

15th April 1945

Dull, fine - cold.

 

0300 - Orders for move during day to area UELZEN.

 

0800 - Capt Fisher to HANOVER area to search for reported party of Br PW in Mily Hospital.

 

1300 - Main body moved, slow difficult journey owing to enemy rd demolition to bivouac area South of BREITENHEES 8573 sections moved with Bns.  No.1 (with 12 Devons) to WRESTEDT 9182, No.3 (with 1 RUR) to STADENSEN 9079, No.4 (with 2 Oxf Bucks) to NETTELKAMP 9179.  Admissions to MDS etc nil.

 

16th April 1945

0200 - C.O. to conf Bde H.Q. orders to move at 1300 hrs NE.  CO visited Sections & 224 Para Fd Amb at STADENSEN.

 

1200 - MDS party moved to STADENSEN, thence to NETTELKAMP and on to bivouac area in wood 925816 remained the night.  Sections with Bns, No.1 with Devons moved in afternoon to STEDERDORF (9283) visited by CO 1430 hrs and thence to LEHMKE.  No.3 with RUR to BOLLENSEN (9481) thence via LEHMKE to HANSTEDT (9788).  No.4 with 2 Oxf Bucks to house 957821 and thence to EMERN (9783).  MDS admissions etc nil.

 

17th April 1945

Fine sunny.

 

0645 - C.O. visited Bde H.Q. (LEHMKE -9585).

 

0815 - MDS party moved - staging at 952825 to HANSTEDT.

 

1130 - MDS opened.

 

1200 - C.O. visited Bde H.Q. meeting with and receiving orders from ADMS thence on to visit all RAPs and Sections.  Admissions 41   Evac 39   Operations 6   Remained 2.  Capt M[?] relieved for [?] duty at WISSINGEN & posted to HQRA.  Capt Rogers returns to Unit.

 

18th April 1945

Raining early morning.  Sections adv with Bns.  12 Devons captured ROCHE, later 2 Oxf Bucks to KATZIEN (0393) & 1 RUR to TEYENDORF 0591.

 

0700 - CO to ROCHE visited Adv Bde HQ & RAP & Sections.  MDS remained at HANSTEDT II.

 

1100 - CO & 2 i/c to Bde HQ ROCHE 0291 - while returning jeep shelled & rec'd seven direct hits.  Nil personnel injured.

 

1530 - CO visited ADMS office BOLLENSON.

 

1730 - CO to O Gp at Bde HQ.  Admissions - 36   RTU - 1   Evac 34   Operations 2   Holding 3.

 

19th April 1945

Fine sunny.

 

0800 - 2 i/c to Bde HQ & recced area for MDS in ROCHE.

 

1100 - MDS closed at HANSTEDT II (971885).  HQ party moved to ROCHE opening at 1245 hrs (027820).  Slight shelling area of MDS from enemy SP guns in wood to EAST.  In afternoon CO visited Bde HQ and Div HQ (Rear).  Admissions 23   RTU - 1   Evacuated - 25   Operation - 1.

 

20th April 1945

Fine dull.  Training continued.  1730 CO to conf ADMS office.  2200 Unit stood to on alarm of German Tks in neighbouring wood.  Search revealed nothing.  Unit stood down.  Recce party to THOMASBURGH.

 

29th April 1945

Fine dull.  Orders for move THOMASBURGH countermanded.  Recce party re-directed to GIHMANDORF  (8213) move completed 1800 hrs.  Unit closed and on wheels.

 

30th April 1945

Fine, sunny.  Training continued.  Unit still at ZIGHUSEN and evac as before.  1000 hrs CO addressed unit.

 

1100 - Unit Thanksgiving Service.

 

1400 - Unit inoculation parade.  CO & Capt Fisher visited installations.  Capt Fisher to US Hospital at SCHWERIN.

1415 - DDMS Airborne Corps & A.D.M.S. visited Unit & subsequently around Hospitals with C.O.

 

1730 - C.O. & D.A.D.H. to P of W camp LUBSTORF.  Unit on swimming.  Admissions 11   RTU - 3   Evac 11   Held - 3.

Hot sunshine.  Trng continued.  C.O. visited Hospital in area to SCHWERIN on liaison visit to US HQ.  Admission - 1   RTU - 1   Evac - 1   Held - 2.

1100 - C.O. visited ADMS at Div HQ (Main) & round of improvised Hospitals.  No 1 Section returned from duties at P of W Camp.  Unit trng continued.  BM visited unit.  Admissions 8   RTU - 2   Evac - 4   Holding - 4.

16th May 1945

Fine sunny.  Unit in state of suspension.

 

1400 - C.O. to conf at Div HQ - [Commander 2nd Army?].

 

1600 - Warning order rec'd for move of Unit to UK.  MDS closed.

 

17th May 1945

Fine sunny.  C.O. with Adv Party dep. to airfield at LUNEBURG and flown by C47 to NETHERAVON.  Main Party of unit handed over accommodation to 5 (Y) Div. moved to Staging area at Cavalry Bks. LUNEBURG.

 

18th May 1945

Fine sunny.  Main Party of Unit flew from Airstrip B251 about 15 miles SOUTH EAST from UELZEN, about 1200 hrs: landed at GREENHAM COMMON approx 1600.  Party reached Unit lines 1800 hrs approx.  Sea Party proceeded by road under charge Capt INSLEY.
