The Battalion set up the Officers' Mess in the house in the background. The owner, a German general, was placed under house arrest and held in the upstairs rooms with his family. One afternoon the general came down, bought the officers a drink and thanked them for their kindness and good behaviour. He then returned upstairs and shot his family before turning the gun on himself.
