On the 14th July 1943 this Private soldier had volunteered to man a captured Italian Howitzer on the high ground South of Catania in Sicily; as the Battalion was without its heavy and supporting weapons. The enemy quickly located this weapon and brought down heavy fire on it. Despite this Private White remained at his post and continued to engage the enemy who were attacking the Battalion position. The situation was critical and the fire from this gun was a considerable factor in the breaking up of the enemy attack.
