At about 1600 hrs on 10th July 1943, No.3603310 Lance-Sergeant Gardner-Roberts J, although severely wounded in the left shoulder and having wounds in the head, seeing that a handcart containing ammunition and a mine had caught fire in the vicinity of his post moved out from cover under heavy fire and attempted to push the handcart over a bank out of range of the post. As he was unable to push the handcart he lifted the mine clear of the handcart before the remaining ammunition exploded. By his cool action under fire and disregarding his personal safety, Lance-Sergeant Gardner-Roberts probably saved serious casualties amongst the men of his post.
