Private Bob Stevenson

Private William Robert Stevenson was posted to the 1st Battalion The Royal Ulster Rifles in 1939. This unit was converted to the gliderborne role in 1941, however Stevenson volunteered to join the Parachute Regiment and served with their 2nd Battalion in North Africa and Sicily. He was wounded during the latter operation and was unable to play any further part in the war. Bob Stevenson died in 2003. His elder brother was Major John Stevenson MBE DCM, who was also involved in the Airborne Forces and was a member of the 2nd Battalion The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, converted into a gliderborne unit at the same time as the 1st Royal Ulster Rifles. John Stevenson, then a Company Sergeant Major, landed near Ouistreham with the 1st Buckinghamshire Battalion of the Regiment on the 6th June.
