Lazaret of HOHENSTEIN-ERNSTAL
Stalag IV F
Visited by Dr. Wenger on the 26th November 1942
Strength
Out of a total of about 600 patients the lazaret contains 6 English and 3 Indians.
Site and Accommodation
The situation of the lazaret is excellent; it is installed in an old convalescent Home in the middle of beautiful forests in a region where there are but few mountains. It consists of two houses and three huts, these latter are rather cold. The different rooms contain from 2 to 40 beds, each with a mattress, sheets and blankets. The prisoners, on arrival, receive a patient's outfit of clothing.
The cooking is done by civilians; the rations are the regulation ones and it is possible to have special diets.
Medical Attention
This is given by 5 doctors and some medical orderlies.
The lazaret has an operating theatre, an X-ray apparatus a room for physiotherapeutical treatments and a laboratory.
Among the 36 patients suffering from tuberculosis there are 6 British, among whom, 4 are suffering from active tuberculosis.
Prisoners who are declared unfit for service are transferred to Re-Assembly Camp IV B where they are again visited for examination.
Religious services are celebrated regularly.
Patients receive 25 pfennigs per day as pay.
Conclusion
The huts where the tubercular patients are housed are not sufficiently warmed, but, generally speaking, the living conditions and the treatment in this lazaret are good.
