Prisoner of War Questionnaires

The following information has been taken from questionnaires completed by liberated Prisoners of War. The collection is held by the National Archives, catalogue reference WO 344, and it can be viewed on the Ancestry website, https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/62114/

3908423 Private Edward Abbey

        Unit: 1st Battalion The South Wales Borderers, 20th Division.

        Work camp: Klein-Reifling Austria (Tree felling, 10th December 1943 to 7th July 1944).

        Sabotage: Destruction of motor saws & axes at Klein-Reifling, Austria.

5771779 Private Ernest Edward Adams

        Unit: Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, 4th Indian Division.

        Captured: Mora, 31st January 1942.

        Camps: P.G. 66 (28th February to 6th May 1942), P.G. 65 (6th May 1942 to 8th June 1943), P.G. 53 (8th June to 20th October 1943), Stalag VIIA (20th October to 1st November 1943), Stalag XVIIA (November to December 1943), Stalag XVIIA Hospital (September to November 1944).

        Work Camps: Rohrar [In a second questionnaire which Adams completed, this is spelt Rorhac] (Building, December 1943 to September 1944), Ternets (Labourer, January to February 1945).

        Illnesses: Appendix. Cause: Not known. Duration: 1 month. Illness: Gastritis. Cause: Bad food. Duration: 1 month. Did you receive adequate medical treatment? Yes.

        Escapes: Yes. Between St Polten and Barden with Gnr EDE April 4th 1945 contacted Russian Army 5th April 1945. Gnr EDE arrived at Odessa with me. Were you physically fit? Fit. Civilian helpers not known. [Account as in the second questionnaire:] Yes. Marched out of Stalag 17A April 1st 200 English broke away from German guards on April 4th. Picked up by the Russians on April 5th. Gnr Ede escaped with me. Is here now.
