RESERVELAZARETT COSEL

Date of visit: March 13th, 1943.

        Since our last visit in November, two of the British doctors have left. Actually there is no trained surgeon among the remaining doctors, although it is obviously necessary to have a surgeon here. The German Stabsarzt is also of this opinion. The O.K.W. shall be asked to exchange one of the above British doctors with Capt. W.M. Nichols, Stalag Luft I. Although the latter is a specialist for brain surgery, he will certainly be able to carry out other current surgical work.

        At the time of our visit there were 68 British prisoners of war in this lazaret. Patients of different nationalities are still looked after by the British medical staff. Among these latter patients are some 400 Russians.

        The kitchen is now adequate, since it is in a new and spacious barrack.

        The operating theatre, whose installation was taken into consideration at our last visit, is going to be completed in a near future.

        Otherwise there is no change in the interior arrangement of the lazaret.

        There was only one complaint concerning insufficient laundry facilities for washing private clothing. For this personnel laundry only one bath is available, which has to be used at the same time for the bathing of patients. The delegates were informed by the Stabsarzt that in a near future the former kitchen barrack will be transformed in a laundry barrack.

        For the rest the British doctors are very satisfied with the lazaret and fully appreciate the help given to them by the German Stabsarzt.

        Drug supply is sufficient. Mail and parcels were said to arrive regularly.
