Brief Statement made by W/Cdr. John Ellis, D.F.C. Krendi Wing, Malta Command, R.A.F.

 

The following aircrew who were shot down in the Hamburg-Bremen area during recent weeks were accommodated at the Naval Dulag, Westertimke. In all probability they have not been registered as P/W. All were liberated by Allied forces on 29 Apr. 45:-

 

        P/O. P. Gough     Missing about 23 Apr. 45.

        F/O. R.W. Sherry, 177543     Same crew as Goff.

        Sgt. Savage     Same crew as Goff.

        W/O. Caddie, A. R.N.Z.A.F.     Wireless operator in Halifax aircraft. Missing about 11 Apr. 45.

        F/O. A.J. McLaren J.19939, R.C.A.F. 127 Wing. (?)     Missing 25 Apr. 45.

        F/O. D. Dodd. 160227 (Rhod)     Missing 11 Apr. 45.

        S/Ldr. D.C. Laubmen, J.14013, R.C.A.F.     Missing 19 Apr. 45 was in the Naval Dulag Westertimke, and then moved to an unknown destination.

 

A complete list of Air Force personnel moved from Westertimke to a former French P/W camp near Lubeck is held by F/Lt. I. Potts, R.N.Z.A.F. The evacuation from Westertimke started on the morning of 10 Apr. The columns reached Buxterhude on 15 Apr. and were to entrain at Weidel for Lubeck.

 

Full details of R.A.F. strafing of P/W were given to Lt. Cdr. Andrews on 1 May.

 

F/Lt. D. Mathison, R.C.A.F. and F/Lt. Bowker (Rhodesian) were shot and wounded near Zeven by Unteroffizier Kreutzen on 11 Apr. 45. F/Lts. Mathison and Bowker are now in Allied hands as they were recovered at Zeven hospital.

 

Unteroffizier Kreutzen was sent back from the march to Lubeck and arrived at Milag about 17 Apr. 45. He was evacuated with other German guards on 19 Apr. This party was reported to have been captured by an Allied patrol. Unteroffizier Kreutzen's description is:- height - 5' 8"  weight - approx. 10 stone 6 lbs.  very square jaw:  wide mouth:  round face:  light brown hair:  clean shaven:  thick-set:  age about 27:  walks with a roll. He may be using an assumed name as he is aware that he is Black-listed. Further details will be available from Group Captain Wray.

 

Unteroffizier Klause, Max, Luftwaffe, was a guard on the march from Sagan to Westertimke. While he was engaged on guard duties outside the wire at Marlag, Westertimke on 19 Feb. 45 he shot F/Lt. C.K.L. Bryson who died from his wounds on 9 Apr. 45. An R.A.F. Court of Enquiry was held at the camp and the findings are held by Group Captain Wray.
