PM - Final Briefing and marshalling for Operation "Tonga".

 

Night - 3 a/c took part in Operation "Coup de Main" and 17 a/c on operation "Tonga".  Details on Form 541.

 

Summary for Operation "Coup De Main".  Total 6 aircraft from Tarrant Rushton.  Three a/c of 644 Sqdn took part.  Cloud was experienced just above the release height (6000') but the gliders reached the L.Z.  The operation was highly successful; the gliders captured the two swing bridges over the Caen Canal and Orne river intact.  The three a/c flew on to bomb a powder factory near Caen.  One a/c entered cloud near the target and failed to bomb.  (This operation has been practiced in the previous month under the title of "Deadstick" - see F.540).

Summary for operation "Tonga".  There were 15 Halifax/Horsa and 2 Halifax/Hamilcar combinations of 644 Squadron involved, 11 Horsas were released at the correct point, one Horsa had to be released 3 miles from the L.Z. and another Horsa was free 6 miles short of the L.Z. owing to the rope breaking, both Horsas had sufficient height to reach the L.Z. area.  One tow rope broke and one tow rope came out of the socket whilst the combinations were still over England, both Horsas force landed.  The 2 Hamilcars were released at the correct point.  Light flak was experienced by the majority of the a/c, there were no losses.  The only casualty was F/O Baird whose foot was lightly hit by shrapnel.

PM - Briefing and marshalling for operation "Mallard".

 

1730 - Take off of operation "Mallard", 16 a/c of 644 Sqdn. were involved.  Details on Form 541.  F/O Clapperton flew the T.Moth so that an A.M. photographer, F/O Clarke could take shots of the marshalling from the air.  Only "D" day casualty, F/O R.B. Baird Pilot, (a Bullet grazed his foot).  Gold wound stripe duly ordered!

 

Summary for Operation "Mallard": Fifteen Halifax/Hamilcar and one Halifax/Horsa combinations took part.  All gliders were released at the correct point.  Light flak and machine-gun fire was experienced by all the combinations.  A/C piloted by S/Ldr. A.G. Norman DFC and F/O B.J.E. Bretherton were hit and returned to Base on three engines.  The starboard tyre of W/O J.A. Herman's a/c was burst by flak, the a/c was landed safely at Base.  No 5 tank port side of F/L R.A. Hobbs a/c was penetrated by flak.  There were no losses or casualties.  The Halifax which towed a Horsa carried nine containers which were released over the correct D.Z.

AM - Sgt. Bailey was given a solo check by F/O Richards and subsequently flew two solo circuits.  The Oxford was flown on "Rebecca" & "Gee" practice for the bomb aimers.

 

PM - F/O Northrop was flown to Ford in the Oxford for the purpose of fetching spares.  S/Ldr. Norman made a test tow with a Hadrian glider.  A.O.C. (No.38 Group) Air Vice Marshal L.N. Hollinghurst, C.B., O.B.E., D.F.C. visited the Squadron.

1100 - The Secretary of State for Air, Sir Archibald Sinclair visited 644 Squadron and congratulated the Squadron on their success in the invasion of France.  Sgt. Bailey was engaged on a low level map reading X C with run ups to a D.Z.

 

PM - 2 heavy Hamilcars were air tested.  Two details of Horsa towing for the training of new glider pilots were completed.  Sgt. Bailey was given towing instruction.

 

Night - Two details of Horsa towing for the training of new glider pilots were completed.  Sgt. Bailey received night towing instruction.  One a/c was employed on operation "Rob Roy" Details on Form 541.

(F/Engineer).  Time Up:  04.50.  Time Down:  07.20.  Details of sortie or flight:  Operation "Robroy".  Dropping of 1 Jeep, 1 Six Pounder Anti-Tank Gun and Six Containers on D.Z. 3 miles south of Ouistreham.  Operation successful.  This crew experienced no flak.

 

A report from the D.Z. states that the loads of the three a/c hit the ground within an area of five hundred yards square.

AM - The loaded Hamilcar which force landed at Ford from operation "Tonga" was retrieved.  One detail of air to ground firing at Steart Flats was completed.  1 a/c air tested.  Low cloud prevented further flying.
