Place: Broadwell

 

Very little flying was undertaken as final preparations for operational role of Squadron were completed.  6 aircraft were air tested within aerodrome range.  1 aircraft flew to HENDON for final modification and returned.  1 aircraft flew to ASTON DOWN and returned in the morning.  Flight Commanders proceeded by road to Advanced H.Q. 46 Group for consultation.  As from 14.00 hours all personnel were confined to camp and 100% security measures brought into force.  F/L. ELWORTHY of "B" Flight returned from temporary duty at BLAKEHILL FARM on promotion to A/S/Lr.

 

3rd June 1944

Place: Broadwell

 

All aircrews were grounded for the day and attended Squadron and Station briefing rooms for final lectures and instructions.  Paratroops and Glider troops allotted to aircraft.  Stores and equipment marshalled and conveyed to assembly points.  Aircraft were painted with special identification markings and all preparations in hand for operational role.

 

4th June 1944

Place: Broadwell

 

No flying was possible today as ground crews were fully occupied in painting new identification markings on all aircraft and gliders.  Crews attended lectures and film displays - preparation for "D" Day.  Weather deteriorated rapidly in the afternoon with much cloud and squally showers followed by rain.

 

5th June 1944

Place: Broadwell

 

All crews attended lectures and final briefing during the day.  At 20.00 hours crews attended 'War Room'.  21 aircraft took off at 23.30 hours, led by Commanding Officer, with No.5 Paratroop Brigade and arrived over D.Z. at 00.57 hours.  Troops were safely despatched and all our aircraft returned.  One or two aircraft were slightly damaged by enemy ack-ack fire.

 

Twenty one aircraft detailed to drop Paratroops and equipment of 3rd Paratroop Brigade on D.Z. 'N' (located on East side of River ORNE between villages of RANVILLE, AMFREVILLE and LE MARIQUET.  Aircraft were over D.Z. at approximately 00.57 to 01.12 hours on 6.6.44.  All troops were dropped successfully.  Some enemy opposition encountered and five aircraft were damaged by enemy flak, but all returned safely to base.  Weather:- 10/10 cloud at 2,000 feet.  Vis: 10 miles.

6th June 1944

Place: Broadwell

 

21 crews were briefed for glider operation ROB ROY at 14.00 hours.  Wireless Operators for Pannier dropping operation stood by from 14.00 hours and full crews were briefed at 17.00 hours.  All aircraft were marshalled immediately after briefing.  19 glider combinations commenced take-off, after 512 Squadron at 18.45 hours.  Undercarriage on No.27 - KG.434 prematurely retarded and aircraft finished up Category "E".  No injuries to crew.  Sundry officers and airmen cleared runway within 5 minutes and glider was marshalled into position and taken off by relief tug.  5 aircraft for pannier operation commenced take-off 22.15 hours, and tugs commenced landing 22.30 hours.  All tug aircraft returned safely.  Superficial damage by light flak was discovered.  Squadron Adjutant was admitted Station Sick Quarters today.

 

Nineteen aircraft detailed to land troops of 6th. Air Landing Brigade, by gliders, and equipment on L.Z. N.  (East of River ORNE between villages of RANVILLE, AMFREVILLE and LE MARIQUET.  Horsa gliders were used, troops British.  Aircraft were over L.Z. approximately 20.57 hours and all gliders released successfully.  Enemy opposition encountered from ground and 3 aircraft were hit by small arms fire from a wood on the West Bank of River ORNE, South East of BENOUVILLE after turning to starboard on release of gliders.  304 Troops of 6th Airborne Brigade carried, plus kit and equipment including Jeeps, Cycles, Trailers and Motor Cycles.  Weather:- Vis. 10 miles - Cloud 10/10 medium.  Wind speed average 290/25 at 2,000'.  One aircraft crashed on initial take-off (See Para 540).

Five aircraft detailed to drop supplies by night on D.Z. 'N' (located to East of river ORNE, between villages of RANVILLE, AMFREVILLE and LE MARIQUET).  Going in to D.Z. aircraft were fired on by ships anchored off the coast and two aircraft hit.  F/O P.R. Stanford, flying one of the aircraft hit, was unable to make D.Z. and returned.  Supplies jettisoned.  All aircraft returned to base.  In all, 58 panniers and containers were dropped on the D.Z.  Weather - Fair and cloudy.

All aircraft landed safely from Pannier dropping operation between 01.26 and 02.20 hours.  2 aircraft were heavily damaged by flak and placed u/s.  No injury to personnel.  Information received that aircraft and crews required for operation as per previous night.  Details made and all preparations carried out.  Operation cancelled at 17.45 hours.  During day inspection of aircraft on operation 6/7th resulted in one aircraft being placed Cat. AC. and one Cat. B.
