Month and year: June 1944

2nd June 1944

Place: Keevil

W/CMDR. DAVIS attended a briefing at No.38 GROUP H.Q. which lasted 3 hours.  Together with the rest of the 38 GROUP Squadron Commanders, he was thoroughly briefed in the plan of Operations for the Second Front and he returned in a confident mood, which was rather stimulating to the rest of the Squadron.  At 14:00 hours a ban was imposed on the camp forbidding the exit of any personnel under any pretext, on pain of being shot.

Flying was restricted to really necessary air tests, and ground crews applied themselves busily to painting the aircraft with the distinctive pattern of black and white stripes which is now a familiar sight among Allied Aircraft.  During the morning, pilots, navigators, and bomb-aimers were briefed by the Station Commander, GROUP CAPTAIN TROOP, for the first operation to be carried out by the Squadron.  The W'ops, Air Gunners and Flight Engineers were similarly briefed during the afternoon.  Most crews spent the afternoon in inspecting the maps and photographs in the briefing room and preparing their maps and charts.

The day opened with much speculation, concerning the weather, which was rough and windy.  It was more or less agreed that nothing would take place that day in view of the weather forecasts and this presumption proved to be correct.  The general air appeared rather subdued, tinged with a certain amount of disappointment, but aircrew continued with their study and the maps and charts and photographs determined to be on the top line for an emergency.

5th June 1944

Once again the weather was cloudy with strong winds and the general gloom deepened a little.  It was realised by every one that if the weather prevented the opening of the second front for the next two or three days the whole scheme might be protracted indefinitely and this would be a very bitter blow to those who anticipated taking part.  However, a final briefing was called for 14:00 hours, and when the crews reported at the Briefing Room, the AIR OFFICER COMMANDING, AIR VICE MARSHALL HOLLINGHURST, C.B. O.B.E. D.F.C., gave a short speech informing the crews that the Operation would take place that night in spite of the weather and affirmed his confidence in the ability of the crews to carry out their task to the letter.  The intention of the operation was to drop the 6th. AIRBORNE DIVISION on D.Z. 'H', a space of approximately 2 square miles on the Eastern side of the River ORME, running from Ouistreham to CAEN by night.  The general objective of the troops, was to hold against the enemy two bridges crossing the RIVER ORME and the CAEN CANAL, and to protect the Eastern Flank of the Main Invasion Force.  The scenes around the aircraft before take-off on this first operation of the Second Front are memorable; the aircraft totalling forty six Stirlings from the Station were lined up in sequence at the end of the runway and the troops were busily engaged in fitting their parachutes, helped by willing ground crews.  One will never forget the tremendous spirit and enthusiasm of these troops of the 12th. BATTALION, 6th. AIRBORNE DIVISION, who were obviously just aching to "have a go" at the Hun.  The take-off and route to the FRENCH COAST went according to plan, the first aircraft becoming airborne at 23:19 hours and dropping at 00:57 hours.  Light flak was seen streaming up from OUISTREHAM and CABOURG, but a battery of guns on the run up to the D.Z. had been effectively silenced 20 minutes previously by 100 Lancasters from Bomber Command.  All aircraft delivered their troops successfully on D.Z. 'H' with the possible exception of F/SGT. GILBERT, who together with his crew failed to return.  The "Daily Sketch" reporter, LEONARD MOSLEY, was carried by F/O. DAVIDSON in 'C' and dropped with the paratroops; he has since written some interesting articles in the daily newspaper, copies of which are attached - APPENDIX I.  Several aircraft were hit by Flak, several crew personnel received injuries.  The injury sustained by W/O. ELLIS, a Bomb Aimer in the crew of F/LT. TAYLOR, is serious and he is still in hospital in a dangerous condition.  After dropping, the aircraft turned Eastwards and re-crossed the FRENCH COAST near FECAMP, returning to Base without further mishap.  A special Operation was carried out by W/O. TOVELL and crew operating from FAIRFORD, which was successful.

6th June 1944

Place: Keevil

The second part of the Airborne plans took place on this day, namely operation "MALLARD", the object of which was to land the 6th. AIRBORNE DIV on D.Z. "W" with equipment in gliders.  D.Z. "W" is situated on the Western Bank of the River ORME, between the Coast and CAEN, and the object of the Air Landing Brigade was to re-inforce and sustain the Airborne Troops already holding the bridges over the RIVER ORME and the CAEN CANAL.  36 Gliders were to be taken from KEEVIL AIRFIELD, 18 of them being towed by No.299 Squadron.  The take-off went very well, with the exception of one glider which cast off twice on the runway, due to imperfect trim.  Another aircraft flown by F/SGT. ROWELL had one engine fail after take-off gradually lost height and had to turn back over the Channel, finally releasing the glider at FORD AIRFIELD, by which time he was at a dangerously low altitude.  The rest of the stream, led by W/CMDR. DAVIS towing CAPT. MORRISON flew on towards the FRENCH COAST with a fighter cover of thirty Squadrons of Allied Aircraft.  The spectacle on approaching the FRENCH COAST was inspiring to a high degree.  The Coast was bathed in pale evening sunshine which enhanced the rich greens and yellows of the fields, and sombre grey of the old Norman villages; an enormous fleet of ships was lying just off shore and landing barges could be seen dis-embarking their loads of troops and equipment.  The aircraft flew inland and released their gliders at the appointed spot and after dropping containers and tow ropes, turned towards the coast once more.  F/O. FARRELL finding that his glider had not released over the release point, used his initiative and cast the glider loose; the glider landed safely on the D.Z.  The scene still resembled fairy land, with the gliders landing in quick succession and the multi-coloured parachutes of the containers wafting lazily to earth, but on the way to the coast, a couple of machine gun nests dispelled this illusion with great effect.  Many Stirlings were damaged by these pockets of resistance, one of which was temporarily put out of action by F/LT. ELLIS and his four Browning Guns.  One Stirling was seen to plunge into the sea in flames just off the coast, and this was F/O. CLARKE and his crew, who were missing after the operation and must now be regarded as lost.  A few gliders and Dakota aircraft were seen floating in the sea on the return journey, but they all seemed to be receiving assistance from rescue launches and protecting aircraft.  It has since been learnt that a battle was raging on D.Z. 'W' when the gliders landed and that both sides ceased fighting to watch the decent of the gliders.  Apparently the re-inforcements arrived in the nick of time, as the Airborne Troops were on the point of being exterminated.  The landing zone was covered by poles 15 feet high with wire stretched from one to the other, and these obstacles caused most of the gliders to crash land.  Surprisingly few glider pilots, however, were injured, but LT. MENTIN, a member of CAPT. MORRISON'S Flight was killed.  A message was received by the AIR OFFICER COMMANDING No.38 GROUP from the C. in C. congratulating him on the success of the operations carried out by the GROUP.

In the evening Operation "ROBROY 4" was carried out from the Station, which included 6 crews from the Squadron.  The intention of the operation was to drop supplies on D.Z. 'H' in 24 containers per aircraft, plus 2 panniers to be dropped from the paratroop exit hole.  The operation took place in daylight and the crews were briefed to fly in pairs to form a defensive formation.  The weather was very unfavourable, the cloud base being about 500 feet over the English Channel and all aircraft were recalled by W/T.  Four of our aircraft failed to receive this message and continued to the D.Z., completing their mission successfully.  Four aircraft landed at base on return, but two landed at FORD, due to the weather.  F/LT. JOHNSON and crew posted from TILSTOCK to the Squadron.
