Marine Griffin was awarded the Military Medal for actions that took place before the 4th Special Service Brigade was attached to the 6th Airborne Division.
During the assault on Port en Bessin on 7th June, Marine Griffin's section came under fire from an enemy machine gun. The remainder of the section went to ground but Marine Griffin immediately went forward alone and captured the occupants of the post. Throughout the assault, Marine Griffin was always in the thick of the fray, always cheerful.
