Major Rushforth commanded "C" Troop of No.45 Commando.
Major Rushforth was in command of his Troop in a flank protection role during the advance and attack on Franceville. A strong counter attack was made by the enemy. Major Rushforth received over the wireless an urgent order to counter attack in order to restore a difficult situation. He rose to the occasion bringing his Troop up in a very short time, cleared out the enemy, leaving 17 dead and many wounded. He continued to lead and inspire his troops by personal example despite the fact that he was wounded and had eventually to be evacuated as a casualty.
