4th August 1944

Place: Rome area

 

Visit to REME Branch AA1 Rome.  Permission to retain refts converting W/Shops to be suitable for lt Bde rôle given.  Two maintenance parties sent to airfields during practice jumps.

 

5th to 8th August 1944

Place: Rome area

 

Work expedited to fully mobilise "Light Bde" tpt. & Bde equip. for operation.

 

9th to 10th August 1944

Place: Rome area

 

Also W/Shop element for Seaborne part prepared.

 

11th August 1944

Place: Rome area

 

W/Shop element consisting of 4 stores lorries, 1 3T GS, 2 3T B/N 11 Jeeps & trailers + 1 off & 43 ORs left for embarkation concentration area near Lake PATRIA near NAPLES.  Arr. this area via Route 7 without incident at 1900 hrs.  Base element of 12 ORs under charge S/Sgt DARTER left near ROME to carry out maintenance & inspection of Base element equip.

 

12th to 20th August 1944

Place: Naples area

 

Tpt & personnel spread over 4 vessels in accordance with American staff instructions tpt & parties despatched to embarkation areas.  Operation so far as Seaborne element concerned cancelled 20 Aug.  Breakdown lorry & 2 NCOs embarked before cancellation of orders & will presumably proceed to S. FRANCE before being returned.

 

21st August 1944

Place: Napes area

 

Return from NAPLES AREA under unit arrgts to BASE location area nr. ROME.  Rear party of 6 ORs under Sgt GWYTHER left in Bde TRANSIT camp NR. NAPLES to maintenance of Bde convoys travelling between NAPLES & ROME when AIRBOURNE Element returns.

 

22nd to 23rd August 1944

Place: Rome area

 

Re-establishment of camp & W/Shop in previous location.  Full maintenance on unit tpt.

 

24th August 1944

Place: Rome area

 

Routine.  Limited amount of work only.  Large no. of containers being serviced.

 

25th to 27th August 1944

Place: Rome area

 

Routine.  Work building up on tpt left at Base.  Servicing party from transit area rejoined main body.

 

28th to 31st August 1944

Place: Rome area

 

Orders received that Bde equipment to be ready operationally in 7 days.  Men put on to 12 hr working day.  Large unit work particularly on containers.
