Bombardier Edward Templeton
Unit : 64th Airlanding Light Battery, RA
Army No. : 812714
Bombardier Templeton arrived on LZ-O with the Operation Bluebird lift, travelling in a Waco glider with Gunner S. Berry, two American pilots, a Jeep, tools, and 19 rounds of 75mm ammunition. The following is a report he submitted concerning the loss of his Denison smock:
On 15/8/44 I landed by glider in B.2 jeep. I was at the [?] wearing my smock airborne with the escape wallet in the right hand side pocket.
[After] getting the jeep out the glider I took Bdr Haynes and Gnr Lowe in the jeep to the A.D.S. [Advanced Dressing Station] for medical attention. Then I reported with the jeep to Capt Martin at the Battery Position. Capt Martin entered the jeep and I accompanied him to collect guns. We returned to the Battery position and the guns were put in action. We were told to unload all ammunition from trailers and to do this I removed my smock containing escape wallet and placed it in the back of B.2 jeep. During unloading Capt Martin had to take the jeep with driver to Bde H.Q. He left the jeep and driver there as it was required for Bde duties. Capt Martin told me that the jeep would be back before long but actually it did not return until approx 1730 hrs.
On its return I asked the driver if he had seen my smock as I did not see it myself on the jeep, and he informed me that during the day he had been carrying many different parties with their kits and my smock must have been removed in error during that time.
I reported the loss to my sub section commander, Sgt Childs.
