Lieutenant K. C. Evans

Unit : 4th Parachute Squadron

Army No. : 267849

Lieutenant Evans, with Lance-Corporal Johanson and Sapper O'Donnell of the 4th Parachute Squadron, accompanied the First Lift to Arnhem as part of the 4th Parachute Brigade's advance party. Evans was originally recommended for the Military Cross but no award of any type appears to have been made. His recommendation is included within the Headquarters, Royal Engineers war diary:

During the period 17th to 21st September 1944, Lieutenant Evans was entirely responsible for leading part of the 4th Parachute Squadron RE in beating off numerous attacks on his position. He killed with his own hands about seven Germans with a Bren gun and two grenades in one day and was finally wounded at the height of another attack, whilst leading his section.  He was a great example to every one in the position by his coolness and initiative, and the personal risks he took [leading his] section.
