Major George Francis de Gex

Unit : Headquarters, 1st Airlanding Light Regiment

Army No. : 50471

Awards : Distinguished Service Cross.

Major De Gex on 19th September 1944 was commanding the guns supporting 4th Parachute Brigade in the area West of Arnhem. He himself was forward with the Brigade, and under heavy fire with complete lack as to his own safety, he organised and directed the fire of the guns with skill and determination.

On 20th September when the Brigade Major was missing, Major De Gex assisted the Brigade Commander to a considerable degree in withdrawing the Brigade successfully through the enemy's position in the face of extremely heavy mortar fire and hand to hand fighting. He showed the highest degree of initiative and daring throughout. His excellent work throughout the battle was without doubt a major factor towards the successful outcome of this particular operation on 20th September.
