Sergeant Derrick Lewis Newton

Unit : No.3 Battery, 1st Airlanding Light Regiment

Army No. : 998673

Awards : Military Cross

This NCO was the Signal Sergeant of 3 Battery. On the 24th September 1944, the telephone line between Regimental Headquarters and 3 Battery was continually cut by shell fire. This line was under direct fire from enemy snipers as well as being under heavy shell and mortar fire. Enemy tanks were not more than 100 yards away. Notwithstanding this Sergeant Newton insisted on going out by himself with spare cable to repair this line. He carried out these repairs successfully on each occasion. By his gallant action in the face of heavy enemy fire he ensured that essential communications were kept open at a particularly vital time and that badly needed artillery support could be given to our own troops. His devotion to duty and coolness under fire were of the highest order.
