Looking east along the Utrechtseweg on the Stationsweg-Pietersbergseweg junction (to the left and right respectively). The buildings to the right occupy the site of the former Hotel Schoonoord, used by the 1st Airborne Division as a Main Dressing Station during the battle. The Hotel was so badly damaged that it had to be demolished after the war. On the opposite side of the road, the blue building just left of centre, is another dressing station, the Hotel Vreewijk. This photograph clearly illustrates how precarious was the position of the dressing stations during the battle, situated directly on the front line with the German positions in the distance and the front-line positions of the 21st Independent Parachute Company behind them. The blue building on the extreme left is "Quatre-Bras", which was famously defended by two of the Company's Bren gunners. Copyright: Geert Boogaard.
