Lance-Corporal Raymond Moore

Lance-Corporal Raymond Boyce Moore, of No.5 Platoon, "A" Company, 10th Parachute Battalion. Born in Barry, South Wales, in 1924, and brought up in Manchester and later in Liverpool, Moore volunteered for the Home Guard in 1941 before joining the Army, serving with the Highland Regiment and the Black Watch. He completed Parachute Course 89 in October/November 1943, and was posted to the 10th Parachute Battalion. At Arnhem, Moore and eight others were cut-off in the woods around Wolfheze, and were unable to rejoin the 1st Airborne Division. Assisted by Theo Braafhart, a local farmer, and Jean Lamberts, who lived close by, the group remained in hiding and Moore was eventually evacuated across the Rhine on Operation Pegasus, 22nd October 1944.
