Lieutenant James Lloyd McKenna

 

CDN/639 Lieutenant James Lloyd McKenna, a CANLOAN officer attached to the 11th Parachute Battalion as Second-in-Command of the Mortar Platoon. He was killed in action on the 22nd September 1944, aged 26, and was first buried in the garden of a house on Weverstraat in Oosterbeek, before being interred in the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, plot 6.A.9. Born on the 12th August 1918, the son of Cornelius and Elizabeth McKenna of Grand Pabos, Gaspe County, Quebec, Canada, he was raised on a farm but at the time of his enlistment had been working for 7 months as an estates clerk with the Royal Trust Company in Quebec. He trained as a parachutist in the United States in August 1942, and after arriving in the UK in June 1944 was posted to the 11th Battalion on the 10th July.
