Staff-Sergeant Dennis George Houghton



6405069 Dennis Houghton with his wife. He served with the Royal Sussex Regiment before volunteering for the Glider Pilot Regiment, and being posted to No.1 Flight, "A" Squadron. He participated in the Normandy landings, flying a glider alongside Sergeant D.H. Tincombe. He was taken prisoner at Arnhem and sent to Stalag XIB at Fallingbostel, POW number 117498. In early 1945, he was forced onto the Long March away from the advancing Russians, later escaping and finding his way to the Allies lines. After the war he returned to the Royal Sussex and retired from the Army in 1966 as a Sergeant Major, then joining the Territorial Army and becoming a Major. He was also a councillor and became Mayor of Bexhill. He died in 1991, aged 69. Copyright: Di Robinson.
