Sergeant Joe Shortland

Joe with his wife, Elsie, and their daughter, Ann, after returning from the prisoner of war camp in May 1945. Although he appears to be holding her, he was in fact too weak after his ordeal and so Elsie is bearing the full load. In the photograph below, he has given up trying.
