The Distinguished Flying Cross, established in June 1918, was by its nature traditionally an RAF distinction, however it was widened to include members of the Glider Pilot Regiment. It was awarded to Officers and Warrant Officers for an act of valour or devotion to duty whilst flying in the face of the enemy. The cross has a bomb at the end of each arm; the vertical arms feature an embossed propellar, while the horizontal have wings which support a laurel wreath and rose at the centre of the design. The white ribbon has a series of diagonal purple lines running parallel.
