Flight Sergeant Ernest Roede of 35 Squadron is second from the left. The second pilot of a Halifax bomber which was shot down on the 30th May 1943, Roede evaded capture on landing, found his way to the house of a doctor at Urmond and then came via Hasselt to Brussels where he was to meet up with an escape organisation, however he was captured by the Gestapo a month later and, after interrogation, was sent to Stalag 357. One of the other men may be Sergeant D. J. Hill of the Royal Air Force, shot down over Dusseldorf on the 23rd April 1944. If you can confirm the name the men, please write to email@example.com.
