British officers in their civilian clothes after being captured on the Toilet Escape. They discovered that on the other side of an 18" thick wall in the British Long Room were the German lavatories, which they had noted were rarely used. Their plan was to burrow through the wall, present themselves as workmen on the other side, and then stroll out of the front door. They made their way through the wall but were apprehended almost immediately. The Germans were aware of the tunneling at an early stage, but they allowed the men to carry on and waste their time as it would give them something to do and prevent them from working on other means of escape in the meantime.
