The explanation reads: "After several years in Germany we acquired an amazing amount of personal kit which unfortunately on moving from one camp to another had to be carried by the prisoners themselves. As replacements were hard to come by, we were loth to discard even the most trivial of our belongings. In consequence, the loads carried were sometimes colossal."
