Lance-Sergeant William Ellis

Unit : No.47 (Royal Marine) Commando

Service No. : EX 4013

Awards : Military Medal

Lance-Sergeant Ellis was awarded the Military Medal for actions that took place before the 4th Special Service Brigade was attached to the 6th Airborne Division.

On the evening of 8th June, on the outskirts of Port-en-Bessin, Sergeant Ellis was sent out in a carrier to collect two wounded men who were known to be lying by the side of the Pont Fatu road.

Sergeant Ellis came under fire from close range from two directions. When he reached the wounded men he leapt out of the carrier and still under fire, lifted them up, put them in the carrier and returned with them to our position. Throughout these actions Sergeant Ellis's conduct and devotion to duty were an example to all.
