Corporal Reginald Morgan North
Unit : "B" Company, 8th Parachute Battalion
Service No. : 4625881
Awards : Military Medal
Normandy June 6 - September 6.
For sustained bravery and devotion to duty. Throughout the campaign this NCO by his continued contempt of danger and determination to get to grips with the enemy has proved an inspiration and magnificent example to not only the men of his own company but to the whole battalion. A typical example of Sergeant North's conduct occurred at Le Mesnil on 29th June 1944 when he was a Corporal.
Sergeant North was commanding the leading section of a patrol which came under heavy enemy machine gun and mortar fire which wounded the officer and 5 other members of the patrol. Corporal North immediately took over command and organised the withdrawal of the patrol, which he covered himself by moving forward and throwing grenades at a machine gun position. He then, under heavy machine gun and mortar fire, went and examined two casualties, one of whom was already dead. The second casualty he dragged back 150 yards under cover. Sergeant North, by his devotion to duty, and total disregard for his own safety, saved the patrol from very heavy casualties and saved one of his comrades from falling into the hands of the enemy.
