Captain John Thompson
Unit : No.6 Commando
Service No. : 138288
Awards : Military Cross
Formerly of the South Wales Borderers.
On 7th June 1944 at Amfreville, Captain Thompson was in command of a force of three Troops which launched an attack against a strong point containing 4 Field Guns, a 20mm dual purpose gun and many Light Machine-Guns. Speed was essential and there was little time for detailed preparation.
Captain Thompson mounted and launched the attack within 15 minutes of receiving his orders. Complete success was obtained, all guns captured and all personnel killed or captured for the loss of only one of our own men. This was almost entirely due to the personal judgement and first class leadership of Captain Thompson, whose example, courage, and disregard for fire was an inspiration to everyone who took part.
