Unit : "X" Troop, No.48 (Royal Marine) Commando

Service No. : 735941

Awards : Military Medal

Private Tickle was awarded the Military Medal for actions that took place on the 6th and 7th June, and therefore before the 4th Special Service Brigade was attached to the 6th Airborne Division. The role of No.48 Commando on the 6th June was to land in the Nan Red sector, on the extreme eastern flank of Juno Beach, and proceed to attack and clear a series of coastal defences. Private Tickle's citation reads:

June 6th and 7th 1944. St Aubin and Langrune.

As a medical orderly attached to X Troop, he attended casualties under fire on the beach where he earned the admiration of his whole troop. During the street fighting, he repeatedly moved down a street which a German machine-gun was firing on, to rescue wounded men who were lying out in the roadway. He rescued six men in this way.
