At about 1730 hrs on 7th June, during the attack on Port-en-Bessin, Sergeant Gardner's section came under heavy machine gun fire which caused four casualties. Immediately afterwards, a German mortar inflicted further casualties including Sergeant Gardner. Despite his wound, Sergeant Gardner pressed forward and occupied the position ordered. Throughout Sergeant Gardner was very cheerful and later showed an excellent spirit whilst waiting to be evacuated from the Regimental Aid Post.
