On 18th June 1944 at Bois de Bavent during an attack by his company on a strong enemy position this NCO, with complete disregard for his own safety, silenced enemy Machine Gun posts on two occasions by himself.
On each occasion he had to cover ground swept by Machine Gun fire and under accurate and observed mortar fire. On each occasion he went completely alone and armed with his sten gun. On each occasion he was successful.
During his stalk on the second Machine Gun post he was himself wounded but continued with his mission and eventually succeeded in silencing the gun.
