Lieutenant Alastair Barrass

Lieutenant Alastair Mortimer Barrass was Troop Leader of "C" Troop, 211th Battery, 53rd Airlanding Light Regiment. He was fatally wounded on the 10th June 1944 when the area was heavily shelled. Aged 20, he is buried at the Hermanville Cemetery. In an article printed in the Worksop Guardian in 2002, Leonard Maidment revealed that Barrass was helping him to carry the wounded Gunner Lemon when shelling began. Barrass pushed them both into a trench and covered Lemon with his own body, suffering internal injuries and trauma from a shell blast. Copyright: Frances Marshall.
