Sapper Leonard William Danks

Len Danks was born on the 7th October 1921, at Stockwell, South London, growing up in Camberwell then Herne Hill with his parents and elder sister. After leaving school, Danks was employed making gun sight scopes, essential war work which, despite his desire to enlist, prevented him from joining the Army until 1943. Having completed his training for the Royal Engineers, he volunteered for parachute training in the same year and was posted to the 591st Parachute Squadron in the 6th Airborne Division. He participated in the Normandy campaign and the Rhine Crossing of 1945. Danks continued to serve in the Army until 1961. Returning to civilian life, he worked as a toolmaker into his 70's. It was at his place of work that he met Doreen, whom he married in 1965 and with whom he had two daughters, Karen and Jackie. Len Danks passed away on the 22nd June 2010.
