Captain Ronald Francis Hall
Unit : 4th Battalion The Dorsetshire Regiment
Army No. : 105574
Awards : Military Cross
During the assault crossing of the NEDER RIJN on the night of 24th/25th September 1944, Captain Hall was in charge of an assault boat with men of "D" Company. He made three attempts to cross the river; on the first two occasions the boat was holed by mortar or small arms fire and on the third was caught by the tide and washed downstream.
Captain Hall kept his party together and worked continuously in recovering boats to make another attempt. The river and banks were under fire throughout.
On the following night he volunteered to cross the river, and made his way alone through the woods, which were held by the enemy, searching for parties of the Battalion to organise their withdrawal.
Throughout the whole of these two nights he showed an offensive spirit and disregard for his own safety which were an inspiration to all.
