Lieutenant Peter Warburton Wood
Unit : "C" Squadron, No.2 Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment
Army No. : 151302
Awards : Military Cross
Lieutenant Wood, then a Captain, was awarded the Military Cross in the aftermath of the Rhine Crossing in March 1945:
Between 17th September - 25th September 1944 this Officer served at Arnhem where he commanded a detachment which held a vital part of the perimeter, and throughout the ten days fighting he maintained his position against frequent attacks and refused his position to the enemy. In addition the area in which he was fighting came under constant heavy artillery and mortar fire, which caused considerable casualties. On the withdrawal, he evacuated his detachment through the enemy lines without further casualties. Captain Wood took part also in the Airborne operation in support of the assault across the Rhine on 24th March 1945. In spite of considerable heavy and light anti-aircraft fire, and the smoke obscured landing zone he successfully landed his glider as briefed without injury to the load. During the whole Operation he was a fine example to the men under his command and a constant inspiration by this coolness at all times. Throughout his service in the Regiment both as a Section and Flight Commander this Officer has rendered extremely valuable service and has shown himself enthusiastic and courageous well above the average.
