CSM Leonard Ernest Oxley
Unit : "S" Company, 1st Parachute Battalion
Army No. : 2610093
Awards : Distinguished Conduct Medal.
During the airborne operations at Arnhem September 17th-25th 1944 this warrant officer showed magnificent powers of leadership and on every possible occasion displayed the most conspicuous gallantry. On September 23rd when commanding a much depleted company his sector was heavily attacked by two Tiger tanks a flame thrower and a superior force of infantry. Judging the exact moment for counter attack he personally led his men with such skill and daring that one tank and the flame thrower were destroyed and some thirty enemy killed outright. His personal initiative and reckless courage in this action were an inspiration to all and were entirely responsible for turning the enemy's attack into a rout and preventing his sector from being overrun.
