Gunner Edgar Walter Neale

Unit : No.3 Battery, 1st Airlanding Light Regiment

Army No. : 1145238

Awards : Bronzen Kruis

On 18th September 1944 this Gunner was the driver of a truck in the Wagon lines of an Observation Post manned by Captain Harrison of 3 Battery. This Observation Post was near the junction of the Oosterbeek and Utrecht road and was under heavy Machine Gun and small arms fire. When Captain Harrison was wounded Gunner Neale without any further orders proceeded at once to the Observation Post under very heavy fire picked up Captain Harrison and carried him back to the vehicle despite increased enemy action. He then loaded Captain Harrison on to a jeep whilst still under fire and drove him along a road which was being swept by enemy fire of all arms to the Regimental Aid Post. This gallant act carried out entirely on his own initiative showed the most complete indifference for his own personal safety and was largely instrumental in saving this Officers life. Throughout the operation Gunner Neale's gallantry was outstanding.
