This British Order of Knighthood was established in 1725 by King George I, though its origins stretch back many centuries into English history, to reward exemplary service in military or civilian life. The Order is headed by the Monarch, and proceeded by the Royal Family, Honourary Members (of a foreign country) and the following classes of Knights; Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GCB), Knight or Dame Commander (KCB / DCB), and Companion (CB). To be in receipt of the GCB or KCB / DCB, the person on whom the honour is bestowed ascends to Knighthood, and thereafter is known as Sir or Dame.
