Born in London on the 22nd February 1922, Magee enlisted in 1939 and trained as a Glider Pilot in January 1942 before joining the Independent Company in July. He served with them in North Africa but returned to the UK in October 1943 to undergo officer training, being commissioned into the Parachute Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant in June 1944. He was posted to the 8th Parachute Battalion in August and served with them during the Ardennes campaign but was transferred to the Reserve Battalion two weeks before the Rhine Crossing in March 1945, later serving with the 22nd Independent Parachute Company in July 1945, the 5th Parachute Battalion in 1947, and the 2nd Parachute Battalion in 1948. Magee transferred to the Irish Fusiliers in 1949, and then to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in 1952, with whom he served until 1977, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Larger image.
