Facing east towards the railway bridge along the "Lion" Route, to the east of Oosterbeek. On Sunday 17th September, the 2nd Parachute Battalion's column passed under this bridge without difficulty, and during the early hours of the following morning, "B" Company of the 3rd Battalion achieved the same. When the 1st Battalion, with the remainder of the 3rd Battalion in tow, reached it at 08:00 that morning, they also managed to pass beneath it, although it was now covered by German infantry and armoured vehicles installed in strongpoints several hundred yards on the far side.
