Major David Madden

 

94285 Major David J. "Tiny" Madden of the Royal Artillery, who served as GSO-2 (Air) with 1st Airborne Division Headquarters. On the 15th September 1944, he attended a party at Moor Park with other staff officers and was involved in a bad car accident on his return, but despite being admitted to hospital he still went to Arnhem. During the fighting around Oosterbeek, Madden was acting as Brigade Major to Brigadier Hackett, and together they were touring the positions of the 1st Airlanding Light Regiment on Thursday 21st September when a mortar explosion wounded Lieutenant-Colonel Thompson; Madden went to assist him but was killed by a second round.
