Lieutenant Crofton Sankey

 

251037 Lieutenant Crofton E. P. Sankey flew to Arnhem on Sunday 17th September 1944, in a Horsa glider carrying a Jeep, trailer, motorcycle, and six other members Headquarters Royal Engineers; Lieutenant-Colonel Myers, Sergeant Cooper, Sapper Vincent Brimble, Driver Hill, a Dutch interpreter of No.10 Commando, and a medical orderly. During the evening of Thursday 21st September, Lieutenant Sankey was sent to the 10th Parachute Battalion area in Oosterbeek to take command of a platoon, but he was shot in the chest by a sniper and died instantly.
